DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2019) – Led by the game-winning goal in the 75th minute from senior Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Del Verbo Divino), off a senior Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) corner kick, the No. 9 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College in a Making Strides Versus Cancer Game on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (11-1-1, 4-0 ECC) remain unbeaten in ECC play, while the Spartans (0-9-1, 0-5 ECC) remain winless.
Achondo recorded his third goal of the year and Rozenblum dished out his team-leading seventh assist of the year. Junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) made one save to earn the shutout win.
St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Anthony Bolivar Sanchez who had a shot on goal. Cameron Turner made one save to take the loss.
The teams traded shots on goal in the first eight minutes of action but both goalkeepers came up with saves to keep the game scoreless. Those would be the lone two shots on goal in the first half sending the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.
The Mavericks dominated possession in the second half and finally broke through in the 75th minute when Achondo headed in a Rozenblum corner kick to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks held off a late Spartan charge to earn a 1-0 victory.
Mercy held a 9-3 edge in shots and a 12-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 19th when they play at New York Tech at 2:30 p.m.
