OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2019) – Despite a goal from sophomore Aaron Denk-Gracia (Mannheim, Germany/Liselotte-Gymnasium Mannheim), the No. 9 Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double-overtime decision to ECC foe New York Tech on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (11-2-1, 4-1 ECC) see their four-game winning streak come to an end and drop their first ECC game of the year, while the Bears (6-8, 4-2 ECC) pick up their fourth ECC win.
Denk-Gracia netted his first goal of the season and senior Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) dished out his ECC-leading eighth assist of the season. Junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) made one save to take the loss.
New York Tech received two goals from Bernd Schlüter and Pol Zapata made eight saves in goal to earn the win.
Senior Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) recorded the game's first shot on goal in the 8th minute, but the Bears would score first in the 23rd minute when Schlüter found the back of the net to make it 1-0.
The Mavericks recorded another shot on goal in the 39th minute. However, New York Tech headed into halftime with a 1-0 lead despite Mercy holding a 7-4 edge in shots.
Zapata made three more saves and Serrano made his lone save to keep the score 1-0. The Mavericks finally scored in the 77th minute when Rozenblum fed Denk-Gracia, who finished to tie the game up at 1-1. Neither team could score in the final 13 minutes of action so overtime would be needed.
Zapata made one more save in the first overtime period and neither team could score so a second overtime period would be needed.
Just under two minutes into the second overtime period, Schlüter scored off an assist from Che Richards to give the hosts a 2-1 double-overtime victory.
Mercy held a 14-8 edge in shots and New York Tech held a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
