Serrano Makes Four Saves as No. 17 Men's Soccer Earns 0-0 Draw With AIC

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2019) – Led by four saves on the day from junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC), the No. 17 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 0-0 double-overtime tie against American International College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (11-2-2) earn their second tie of the season, while the Yellow Jackets (6-4-2) also pick up their second tie.

Sophomore Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) had a team-high two shots on goal and Serrano had four saves to post a shutout.

AIC was led by Adrian Hoeflich who had two shots and one shot on goal. Ben Taylor made seven saves to post a shutout.

Mercy recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 17th minute when senior Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) forced Taylor to make his first save.

Jones recorded a shot on goal in the 35th minute that was stopped by Taylor and then fired another shot on goal in the 39th minute that was stopped by a Yellow Jacket defender to keep the score at 0-0. The score remained 0-0 at halftime with Mercy holding a 7-2 edge in shots.

Serrano made three saves in the first 15 minutes of the second half to keep the game scoreless. Taylor made three more saves in the second half to keep the game scoreless at the end of regulation.

Serrano stopped one more shot in the first overtime period but neither team scored so another overtime period would be needed.

Taylor made his final two saves in the second overtime period to keep the game scoreless. Neither team could find the back of the net so the game ended in a 0-0 draw.

Mercy held a 16-10 edge in shots and AIC held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 26th when they play at Bridgeport at 3 p.m.
