Mangada Records Game-High Three Shots on Goal as No. 17 Men's Soccer Visits Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Oct. 26, 2019) – Despite a game-high three shots on goal from senior Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University), the No. 17 Mercy College men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at Knights Field.

The Mavericks (11-3-2, 4-2 ECC) have dropped two of their last three games, while the Purple Knights (9-4-1, 4-1-1 ECC) have won two games in a row.

Mangada had three shots on goal and junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) made three saves to take the loss.

Bridgeport received a goal from Goncalo Mendes and Carlos Tofern made five saves to earn the win.

Serrano made two saves in the first five minutes of action and Tofern stopped three shots in the first 12 minutes to keep the game scoreless. The Purple Knights broke through in the 17th minute when Mendes scored on a header following a cross from Nikolai Vadseth and Erlend Skagestad to make it 1-0. The score stayed 1-0 at halftime with Bridgeport holding a 7-6 edge in shots.

The second half saw the Mavericks outshoot Bridgeport 7-1, but Tofern came up with a pair of saves in the half to keep Mercy off the board.

Mercy held a 13-8 edge in shots and a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 2nd when they host Roberts Wesleyan for Senior Day at 3 p.m.
