OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Oct. 19, 2019) – Powered by a goal from junior Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge) in the 76th minute, the RV Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 1-1 double-overtime tie with ECC foe New York Tech on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (9-2-1, 3-1-1 ECC) are unbeaten in their last five games, while the Bears (4-4-3, 3-1-2 ECC) earn their second tie in ECC play.
Denning recorded her team-leading sixth goal of the year and had a team-high three shots on goal. Junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made seven saves in a full 110 minutes of action.
New York Tech was led by Kelly Gerdes who scored a goal and by Nicole Genis who made a game-high nine saves.
The opening half saw Torres make three saves in the first 24 minutes of action. Freshman Carli LoNigro (Blue Point, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) recorded the Mavericks first shot on goal in the 31st minute, but Genis made the save to keep the game scoreless. Torres made a final save in the first half in the 44th minute to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
Torres made her fifth save just 42 seconds into the second half, but the Mavericks came back with shots on goal by sophomores Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) and Fernanda Castro (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) in the 51st and 55th minutes. Both shots were stopped by Genis to keep the game at 0-0. The Bears drew a foul in the box in the 62nd minute and Gerdes found the back of the net on a penalty kick to give New York Tech a 1-0 lead.
Mercy would knot the score up at 1-1 in the 76th minute when Denning connected on a penalty kick after a Bears foul in the box.
Torres made two more saves in regulation to keep the score at 1-1, sending the teams into overtime.
McKail and Denning recorded shots on goal in the first overtime period, but neither team could score so another overtime period was needed.
Senior Jess Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom), Denning and Castro all forced Genis to make saves in the second overtime period, but once again neither team could score and the game ended in a tie.
Mercy held a 20-10 edge in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 26th when they play at Bridgeport at 6 p.m.
