SYRACUSE, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2019) – Powered by the first collegiate goals from freshman Tyra Anderson (Windsor, Conn./Windsor) and sophomore Sydney Cooper (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over Le Moyne College on Wednesday afternoon at Ted Grant Field.
The Mavericks (10-2-2) are 5-0-2 in their last seven games, while the Dolphins (1-13-1) have dropped eight games in a row.
Anderson and Cooper both picked up their first goals of their careers and seniors Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) and sophomore Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana) dished out assists. Junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) played the first half in goal with two saves to earn the win. Sophomore Veronica Scruggs (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) played the second half in goal.
Le Moyne was led by Maddison Vine and Lexi Aquilino who had a shot on goal. Shannon Bennison made the start in goal and stopped two shots to take the loss. Allison Moreau played the second half in net and made four saves.
The Dolphins recorded the first shot on goal in the 12th minute, but Torres made the stop to keep the game 0-0. Bennison made a pair of saves in the 29th and 31st minutes and Torres made another save in the 37th minute to keep the game scoreless.
The Mavericks finally broke through in the 44th minute when Reyes sent a cross from the center of field 35 yards out to Anderson who finished to put Mercy up 1-0 heading into halftime.
Moreau made three saves in the second half before Cooper scored in the 83rd minute to make it 2-0. Elizarraras took a corner kick and Seara flicked it over to Cooper who put the ball into the net to give Mercy an insurance goal. Mercy held on for the win as the backline did not allow a shot on goal in the second half.
Mercy held a 16-10 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 2nd when they host Roberts Wesleyan at 12 p.m. for Senior Day.
