Brandt and Reyes Score to Lead Women's Soccer to 2-0 Senior Day Win Over Roberts Wesleyan

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 2, 2019) – Powered by goals from senior Jess Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) and sophomore Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 Senior Day victory over ECC foe Roberts Wesleyan College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

In a ceremony prior to the game, Brandt, Mackenzie Warner (Athens, Pa./Corning CC), Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) and graduate student RaeAnn Ioannou (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) were recognized for their contributions to the women's soccer program.

The Mavericks (11-2-2, 4-1-2 ECC) have won two games in a row and conclude the regular season 8-0 at home, while the Redhawks (7-5-2, 2-3-2 ECC) have dropped three of their last four games.

Brandt had her second goal of the season and Reyes netted her first. Ioannou dished out her second assist of the year and junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made three saves to earn the win.

Roberts Wesleyan was led by Taylor Rutland who had two shots on goal and Kelsey Brinkel made four saves to take the loss.

Seara recorded the Mavericks first shot on goal in the 11th minute, but Brinkel made her first save to keep the game scoreless. Torres made her first save in the 16th minute on a Rutland shot that was in the upper right corner keeping the game at 0-0.

Mercy finally broke through in the 33rd minute when Brandt fired a long distance shot after a failed clear by the Redhawks following a Maverick corner, giving Mercy a 1-0 lead. Each goalkeeper made a save to close out the half and send the teams into halftime with the Mavericks up, 1-0.

Brinkel made another save in the 54th minute and Torres stopped an Israela Groves shot in the 77th minute to keep the game at 1-0. Reyes gave the Mavericks an insurance goal in the 89th minute when Ioannou fed her a thru ball and the sophomore finished in the middle to make it 2-0. The Mavericks held on for the Senior Day win.

Mercy held a 15-4 edge in shots and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 7th when they play at Goldey-Beacom at 2 p.m.
