DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2019) – Powered by goals from graduate student RaeAnn Ioannou (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) and junior Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-2, 2-1 ECC) bounce back from their first ECC loss, while the Lions (5-3-1, 1-2 ECC) have dropped two games in a row.
Ioannou scored her third goal of the year and added an assist. Denning scored her first goal of the season and sophomore Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) dished out an assist. Junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made one save to earn the win.
Molloy was led by Annie Coogan who had a shot on goal. Jackie Carty made four saves to take the loss.
The Mavericks recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 15th minute when Carty stopped a Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) shot. Mercy scored their first goal of the game soon after in the 19th minute when Ioannou fired home a Hoyt cross into the lower right corner of the net to put the Mavericks up, 1-0.
The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime with Mercy holding a 5-2 edge in shots.
The Lions took the first shot on goal in the second half in the 61st minute, but Torres was up to the challenge and kept the Mavericks in the lead. Mercy increased their lead to 2-0 in the 73rd minute when Ioannou fed a cross to Denning who finished in the right side of the net to give the Mavericks an insurance goal.
Mercy forced Carty to make two more saves and the Maverick backline did not allow a shot on goal the rest of the way to preserve the win.
Mercy held an 11-5 edge in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 8th when they host New Haven at 12 p.m.
