DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2019) – Powered by a goal and an assist from senior Jess Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over University of New Haven on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-2) have won two games in a row, while the Chargers (2-8-1) have dropped three games in a row.
Brandt scored her first goal of the season and had her second assist. Junior Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge) netted her second goal of the season and senior Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) had her first assist of the year. Junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made two saves to earn the shutout win.
New Haven was led by Sorcha Ni Bhraonain and Daniela Perez who both had a shot on goal. Paige Davis made six saves to take the loss.
Mercy came out as the aggressors recording five shots on goal in the first 38 minutes of action. All five shots were stopped by Davis to keep the game scoreless. The Mavericks finally got on the board in the 41st minute when Brandt sent a long pass from beyond midfield to Denning who beat the goalkeeper one-on-one to give Mercy a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 heading into halftime with the Mavericks holding a 9-0 lead in shots.
The Chargers recorded the first two shots on goal of the second half, but both were stopped by Torres to keep Mercy ahead 1-0. Brandt would give the Mavericks an insurance goal in the 66th minute when Elizarraras sent a cross from right to left into the box where Brandt fired the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
The Mercy backline would not allow a shot on goal the remainder of the game to earn the victory.
Mercy held a 12-4 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 12th when they host Southern Connecticut State at 12 p.m.
