Denning Scores Twice to Lead Women's Soccer to 2-0 Victory Over Southern Connecticut

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 12, 2019) – Powered by a career-high two goals from junior Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (8-2) have won three games in a row, while the Owls (7-3-1) see their three-game winning streak come to an end.

Denning now has four goals on the year and sophomore Fernanda Castro (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista) and senior Jess Brandt (Folsom, Calif./Folsom) added assists. Castro produced her first assist and Brandt dished out her third of the season, tying her for the most assists in program history with 18. Junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made two saves to earn the shutout win.

Southern Connecticut was led by Meaghan Kelley and Paula Nunez who both had a shot on goal. Allie Smith made two saves to take the loss.

Mercy wasted little in scoring as Castro sent a ball from midfield down the right side of the field to Denning who found the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 6th minute.

Sophomore Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) came back with a shot that was stopped by Smith and Kelley answered with a shot on goal in the 7th minute that was stopped by Torres. The Owls had a good scoring chance in the 13th minute when a Juliana Santos shot hit the crossbar, but the Mavericks stayed in front 1-0 heading into halftime.

The two teams traded shots on goal in the first five minutes of the second half and the score remained 1-0 heading into the final ten minutes of action. Mercy tacked on an insurance goal in the 82nd minute when Brandt found Denning and the junior capitalized for the second time to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead.

The score remained 2-0 as the Maverick backline surrendered just two shots on goal in the game to lead Mercy to the victory.

Mercy held a 12-6 edge in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, October 16th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 12 p.m.
