Three Mavericks Score as RV Women's Soccer Defeats STAC, 3-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 16, 2019) – Powered by three different Mavericks scoring, the RV Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over ECC foe St. Thomas Aquinas College in a Making Strides Versus Cancer Game on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (9-2, 3-1 ECC) have won four games in a row, while the Spartans (0-10-1, 0-4-1 ECC) remain winless on the year.

Sophomore Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) and Juliana Conforti (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) scored their first goals of the season and junior Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge) tallied her team-leading fifth goal of the year. Sophomore Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and senior Mackenzie Warner (Athens, Pa./Corning CC) dished out assists and junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) played the first half in goal to earn the win. Sophomore Veronica Scruggs (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) played the second half in goal and made two saves.

St. Thomas Aquinas was led by Victoria DiMarco who had a team-high five shots. Colleen Stevens made two saves in the first half to take the loss.

Senior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and Denning forced Stevens to make a pair of saves in the first 32 minutes of action. The Mavericks finally got on the board in the 37th minute when McKail took a Spartan turnover and fired the ball from long distance into the upper corner of the net to make it 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the 43rd minute when Hoyt sent a 20-yard pass to Denning and the junior fired from right to left into the back of the net to give Mercy a 2-0 lead. The score remained 2-0 heading into halftime with Mercy holding a 9-0 edge in shots.

It remained 2-0 until the 87th minute when Warner found Conforti on a thru ball and the sophomore fired a shot off the goalkeeper that rolled into the net to put the Mavericks up 3-0. Mercy led the rest of the way to earn the shutout win.

Mercy held a 15-7 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 19th when they play at New York Tech at 12 p.m.
