Sipavicius Nets Goal and Assist as No. 8 Men's Soccer Defeats Molloy, 3-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 5, 2019) – Led by a goal and an assist from redshirt sophomore Ryan Sipavicius (Flushing, N.Y./Holy Cross), the No. 8 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over ECC foe Molloy College on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (8-1-1, 3-0 ECC) bounce back from their first loss of the season, while the Lions (3-4-1, 0-2 ECC) have dropped three games in a row.

Sipavicius recorded his first goal of the season and first assist. Junior Nigel Hawthorne (Queens, N.Y./Millersville University) scored his second goal of the season and sophomore Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) netted his second goal. Senior Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) dished out his sixth assist of the year and freshman Vasco Baptista (Alges, Portugal/Escola Secundaria De Miraflores) contributed his second assist of the season. Junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) played the full 90 minutes in goal to earn the win.

Molloy was led by Anthony Cestaro who recorded a shot and Sergio Peralta made four saves to take the loss.

The Mavericks had two scoring chances in the 24th and 26th minutes when senior Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) had two shots stopped by Peralta to keep the game scoreless. Mercy got on the board in the 39th minute when Sipavicius scored off a free kick taken by Rozenblum to make it 1-0.

The score stayed 1-0 heading into halftime with Mercy holding a 6-2 edge in shots.

Mercy made it 2-0 in the 64th minute when Sipavicius beat the goalkeeper and fed a cross to Hawthorne who finished to the right side of the net to give the Mavericks an insurance goal.

The score remained 2-0 until the 88th minute when Baptista crossed the ball over to Jones who fired a rocket into the top right corner of the net to give the Mavericks a 3-0 lead.

The Mercy backline held the Lions without a shot on goal the entire game to lead the Mavericks to the shutout win.

Mercy held a 13-5 edge in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, October 8th when they host Chestnut Hill at 3 p.m.
