Corral Scores Game-High Three Goals as No. 11 Men's Soccer Defeats Chestnut Hill, 7-0

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Oct. 8, 2019) – Powered by three goals and an assist from senior Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto Francesco Faa Di Bruno), the No. 11 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 7-0 victory over Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (9-1-1) are off to their best start since 1989 and score their most goals in a game since October 18, 2012 against Felician. The Griffins (3-5-1) have dropped three games in a row.

Corral set a new career high for goals in a game and now has a team-high seven goals on the year. Senior Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University) had a goal and three assists, senior Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) had a goal and an assist and senior Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) and sophomore Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) also scored. Seniors Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Del Verbo Divino) and Jose Izarra (Valencia, Venezuela/Marshalltown CC) and redshirt freshman Steven Fernandez (Rego Park, N.Y./Iona College) also had assists. Junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) played the first half in goal to earn the win. Junior Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made two saves in net in the second half.

Chestnut Hill was led by Matt Kehr and Luciano Torres who both had a shot on goal. Frank Maniscalco played the first half in goal with three saves to take the loss.

Mercy wasted little time in getting on the board as Corral scored in the 4th minute of action following a rebound of a Rebolledo-Camus shot that was stopped by Maniscalco to make it 1-0.

The score remained 1-0 until the 21st minute when Corral found Rebolledo-Camus who put the ball into the net to make it 2-0. Mangada later made it 3-0 in the 31st minute when he took a Chestnut Hill turnover and made his way through the defense before firing a shot past Maniscalco.

Corral added on two more goals in the 37th and 44th minutes to make it 5-0. Achondo assisted on the first and Fernandez and Mangada assisted on the final goal of the half.

Mercy continued to dominate in the second half when Rozenblum fired a long distance shot into the upper corner of the goal, following a pass from Mangada, which made it 6-0 in the 56th minute.

Jones scored the final goal of the game in the 70th minute following assists from Izarra and Mangada to make it 7-0. Mercy led the rest of the way and Williams made two saves in the second half to preserve the shutout win.

Mercy held a 21-4 edge in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 12th when they host Staten Island at 3 p.m.
