LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. (Nov. 10, 2019) – Powered by nine different Mavericks scoring, the No. 24 Mercy College women's soccer team secured the No. 2 seed in next week's ECC Championship with an 11-0 victory over ECC foe Lincoln University on Sunday afternoon.
The Mavericks (13-2-2, 5-1-2 ECC) end the regular season on a four-game winning streak and have secured their seventh straight ECC Championship appearance. Mercy will host No. 3 seed New York Tech in a Semifinal matchup on Thursday, November 14th at 1 p.m. The Lions (1-15, 0-8 ECC) end their season with a loss.
Senior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) led the way with one goal and four assists. The senior now has a school record 20 assists in her career. Sophomores Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and Anicia Reyes (San Diego, Calif./Santana) both scored two goals and sophomores Fernanda Castro (San Diego, Calif./Bonita Vista), Juliana Conforti (East Northport, N.Y./Northport) and Sydney Cooper (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos), graduate student RaeAnn Ioannou (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge), junior Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge) and freshman Carla Jooste (Camas, Wash./Camas) all scored. Junior Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) dished out two assists and senior Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) had an assist. Sophomore Veronica Scruggs (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) made one save in 64 minutes of action to earn the win. Freshman Jaden Sutton (Corona, Calif./Santiago) played the final 26 minutes in goal.
Lincoln was led by Tamara Evans who had a shot on goal and Lena Rodriguez recorded her 600th career save with 19 saves on the day to take the loss.
Mercy opened the scoring in the 7th minute when Seara had her shot saved but Reyes put away the rebound to make it 1-0. In the 13th minute, the Mavericks made it 2-0 when Seara fed Reyes on a 2v1. The score remained 2-0 until the 18th minute when Seara assisted on a Hoyt goal to make it 3-0. Seara connected again with Hoyt in the 19th minute to increase the Mercy lead to 4-0. Denning made it 5-0 in the 45th minute and sent the Mavericks into halftime up, 5-0.
Cooper gave Mercy a 6-0 lead less than a minute into the second half. Jooste made it 7-0 in the 53rd minute off an assist by Shimborske. Seara later put Mercy ahead 8-0 following an assist from Shimborske in the 60th minute.
Ioannou, Castro and Conforti capped off the scoring for the Mavericks.
Mercy held a 40-4 edge in shots and a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 14th when they host New York Tech in an ECC Semifinal matchup at 1 p.m.
