Three Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Faces Adelphi

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 10, 2019) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 120-57 decision to Adelphi University on Sunday night at Goldstein Fitness Center.

The Mavericks (0-2) drop their second straight game, while the Panthers (2-0) earn their second straight win.

Freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had a team-high 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting and senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) had 11 points and six rebounds. Junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) had 11 points and four rebounds and senior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) had seven points.

Adelphi was led by Fallyn Stephens who had a game-high 26 points.

The Panthers opened the game with ten straight points to take a 10-0 lead at the 5:51 mark of the first quarter. Adelphi led 18-8 following a Wall layup before the Panthers responded with a 6-0 run to build the lead to 16, 24-8, with 2:33 left in the first quarter. A free throw by Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) made it 24-11 at the end of the first quarter in favor of the Panthers.

Adelphi started the second quarter on a 22-9 run to take a 46-20 lead with 3:41 remaining in the first half. Mercy cut the deficit to 24, 53-29, after a Collier layup, but the Panthers closed the half on a 10-1 run to take a 63-30 lead at halftime.

The Panthers outscored the Mavericks 33-14 in the third quarter and 24-13 in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.

Mercy shot 30.4 percent (21-of-69) from the floor, 25.0 percent (5-of-20) from downtown and 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the foul line. Adelphi shot 49.4 percent (42-of-85) from the field, 46.2 percent (18-of-39) from beyond the arc and 81.8 percent (18-of-22) from the charity stripe.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, November 14th when they play at Felician at 6 p.m.
