RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Nov. 14, 2019) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 76-71 decision to Felician University on Thursday night at Job Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (0-3) have dropped three games in a row, while the Golden Falcons (1-0) win their season opener.
Junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) had a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds and freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. Senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) had ten points and seven rebounds and senior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) had eight points and six rebounds.
Felician was led by Kiera Dunhill who had a team-high 17 points.
Mercy took a 7-6 lead at the 4:56 mark of the first quarter after two free throws from Brown. Felician answered with a 6-1 run to take a 12-8 lead and headed into the second quarter with a 13-10 lead.
The Mavericks started the second quarter on an 18-6 run, capped off by a Collier layup, which gave Mercy a 28-19 lead with 5:15 left in the half. Felician made it a seven-point game, 28-21, at the 4:10 mark before the Mavericks ended the half on an 8-2 run to head into halftime with a 36-23 lead.
Felician opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run to cut the deficit to seven, 36-29. Mercy built the lead back to ten, 41-31, at the 7:30 mark after two Wall free throws. Felician answered with a 21-8 run to take a 52-49 lead with 1:39 remaining in the quarter. A Wall layup made it a one-point game before a Haylee Ramirez at the end of the quarter gave the hosts a 55-51 lead after three quarters.
The Golden Falcons went on a 7-0 run to open the fourth quarter, increasing their lead to 62-51 with seven minutes left to play. A Hall layup made it 62-53, but the hosts ensued with a 7-1 run to increase the lead to 15, 69-54, with 4:58 on the clock. Mercy later made it 69-61 after another Wall layup, but Felician put the lead back to 13, 75-62, with 1:31 on the clock and withstood a late Maverick rally to earn the win.
Mercy shot 40.0 percent (22-of-55) from the floor, 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from downtown and 67.7 percent (21-of-31) from the foul line. Felician shot 38.5 percent (30-of-78) from the field, 17.4 percent (4-of-23) from beyond the arc and 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from the charity stripe.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 16th when they play at Holy Family at 1 p.m.
