Game Preview: No. 2 Seed Women's Soccer Hosts First and Second Rounds of NCAA Tournament Starting on Friday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 19, 2019) – The Mercy College women's soccer team resumes action on Friday, November 22nd when they host Southern New Hampshire University in an NCAA Tournament First Round matchup.

Vs. Southern N.H. – The Penmen earned a 4-2 victory over the Mavericks on September 6, 2019.
Vs. Molloy – The Mavericks earned a 2-0 victory over the Lions on October 5, 2019.

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is making their fifth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and third straight. The Mavericks were last the No. 2 seed in the tournament in 2017 and advanced to the school's first-ever Final Four. Mercy is led by senior Trista Seara who was named First Team All-ECC after leading the Mavericks with 18 points on six goals and six assists. Junior Kaitlyn Denning was tabbed Second Team All-ECC after ranking second on the team with 15 points by way of a team-high seven goals and one assist. Sophomore Anicia Reyes ranks third on the team with 12 points on five goals and two assists and senior Natalia Elizarraras was named First Team All-ECC after recording 11 points on three goals and five assists. Sophomore Sydney Cooper was also named First Team All-ECC after helping lead a defense that has allowed just 12 goals this season. Junior Melissa Torres was named First Team All-ECC and Goalkeeper of the Year after going 12-3-2 with eight shutouts, 57 saves, a .826 save percentage and 0.72 goals against average.

 

Scouting the Penmen

Southern New Hampshire is making their six appearance in the NCAA Tournament and third straight. The Penmen carry a 1-3-2 mark all-time in the tournament and fell to the Mavericks in the second round of the tournament in 2017 at Mercy Field. Southern New Hampshire is led by junior Allyson Patterson who has a team-high 25 points on ten goals and five assists. Sophomore Dorthea Glorud is second on the team with 24 points on nine goals and six assists and sophomore Sydney Carney has 21 points on five goals and a team-high 11 assists. Sophomore Hannah Rose is 10-6-1 in goal with 99 saves, a .756 save percentage and 1.88 goals against average.

 

Scouting the Lions

Molloy is making their first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament after winning their first ECC Championship on Sunday. The Lions are led by junior Dana Poetzsch who has a team-high 53 points on a team-high 24 goals with five assists and eight game-winning goals. Sophomore Lexi Verni is second on the team with 21 points on eight goals and five assists. Lauren Marinello, Kelsie Moinzadeh and Meaghan O'Callaghan all have ten points and junior Jackie Carty is 14-4-2 in goal with 92 saves, nine shutouts, a .885 save percentage and 0.60 goals against average.

 

Scouting the Falcons

Bentley is making their first ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament after advancing to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Semifinals. The Falcons are led by sophomore Dana Goulet who has a team-high 11 points on five goals and one assist. Junior Marissa Burns is second on the team with nine points on four goals and one assist. Junior Emma Guccione has eight points on two goals and a team-high-tying four assists and sophomore Emily McGrath has seven points. Junior Kat Hassapis is 10-7-2 in goal with 93 saves, seven shutouts, a .823 save percentage and 1.02 goals against average.
