PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (Nov. 20, 2019) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team dropped a 99-64 decision to Pace University on Wednesday night at Goldstein Fitness Center.
The Mavericks (0-5) have dropped five games in a row to open the season, while the Setters (4-0) remain unbeaten.
Senior Lamont Williams Jr. (Irvington, N.J./County College of Morris) had a team-high 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting and junior Matthew Alectus (Hollywood, Fla./Hallandale) had 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting. Redshirt junior Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional) recorded ten points and eight rebounds and sophomore Korey Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) and freshman Brandon Wilson (Farmingdale, N.J./Covenant College Prep) both netted nine points.
Pace was led by Peyton Wejnert who had a game-high 20 points.
Mercy took a 7-4 lead at the 15:59 mark following a layup by Griffin. Pace answered with an 18-5 run to take a 22-12 lead with 11:22 remaining in the opening half. The Mavericks came back on a 12-3 run, capped off by a Williams Jr. three, which made it 25-24 in favor of Pace with 6:46 on the clock.
The Setters would close the half on a 20-3 run to take a 45-27 lead at halftime.
Pace opened the second half on a 19-6 run to increase the lead to 31, 64-33, with 14:32 remaining in the contest. The Setters increased the lead to as many as 39 points in the second half and pulled away from the Mavericks to earn the win.
Mercy shot 38.5 percent (20-of-52) from the floor, 40.0 percent (10-of-25) from downtown and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the foul line. Pace shot 56.9 percent (41-of-72) from the field, 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from beyond the arc and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the charity stripe. Pace held a 16-0 edge in fast-break points and a 34-7 edge in points off turnovers.
Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, November 23rd when they host Georgian Court at 2 p.m.
