DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Nov. 3, 2019) – Powered by two goals from junior Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and two assists from senior Catherine Brudi (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip), the Mercy College field hockey team earned a 2-0 Senior Day win over Frostburg State University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
In a ceremony prior to the game, seniors Samantha Lorenc (Pompton Lakes, N.J./Pompton Lakes), Haley Jandris (Winchendon, Mass./Murdock), Sabrina Anderson (East Rochester, N.Y./East Rochester JR/SR), Brudi, Kaylee Organista (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) and Rebecca Podskoch (Swoyersville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) were recognized for their contributions to the Mercy College field hockey program.
The Mavericks (4-12) snap a seven-game losing streak in their season finale, while the Bobcats (2-16) have dropped three games in a row.
Anthony scored her second and third goals of the year and Brudi dished out her second and third assists of the year. Brudi also sets a new school record for games played with 71, surpassing the previous record of 70 set by Jackie Ballin and Alicia Williams. Sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) made four saves to earn the shutout win.
Frostburg State was led by Gabby Rachuba who had a game-high three shots on goal. Sierra Smizer made six saves to take the loss.
The Mavericks recorded the first shot on goal of the game in the 6th minute of action when freshman Lily Sherry (Brick, N.J./Brick Township) forced Smizer to make her first save. Viscione made a key stop on a Frostburg penalty stroke attempt in the 7th minute to keep the game scoreless. Each goalkeeper made one more save in the quarter to keep the game scoreless after one quarter.
Smizer made two more saves in the second quarter on Anthony shots to send the teams into halftime scoreless.
Smizer stopped a Nicole Cotton (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) shot in the 44th minute to keep the game knotted at 0-0 heading into the fourth quarter.
The Mavericks finally broke through in the 50th minute of action when Brudi sent a ball in and Anthony deflected it in to put Mercy up 1-0. The score remained 2-0 until the 59th minute when Brudi fed another ball in front of the cage to Anthony who finished to give the Mavericks a 2-0 lead. Mercy led the rest of the way to secure the Senior Day win.
Mercy held a 13-7 edge in shots and a 13-10 edge in penalty corners.
