Brown Records 1,000th Career Point as Women's Basketball Earns 66-60 Victory Over Concordia

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 10, 2019) – Powered by junior Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) recording her 1,000th career point, the Mercy College women's basketball team extended their win streak to six games with a 66-60 victory over Concordia College on Tuesday night at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

The Mavericks (6-3) have now won six games in a row for the first time since 1985 and improve to 4-0 at home. The Clippers (1-9) have now dropped four games in a row.

Brown had four points and six rebounds and recorded her 1,000th career point at the 6:59 mark of the second quarter on a jumper. The junior becomes the 19th Maverick in program history to reach the mark and first since Jasmine Williams in 2012. Brown reaches the mark in just 64 games and is currently averaging a team-best 17.4 points per game. Freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham) had a team-high 17 points going 9-of-10 from the foul line with three assists and four rebounds. Sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had 13 points, four assists and six rebounds and freshman Briana Barnard (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) had nine points and seven rebounds. Senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) had eight points and eight rebounds and senior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) scored six points.

Concordia was led by Sara Hopkins who had a game-high 18 points.

The Clippers scored the game's first five points and led 9-6 with 6:12 left in the opening quarter. Mercy followed with a 5-0 run to take an 11-9 lead with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Concordia tied the score up at 13-13 before the Mavericks rattled off seven straight points, capped off by two Collier free throws, which gave Mercy a 20-13 lead. The Clippers scored the final four points of the quarter to head into the second quarter down, 20-17.

A Bender three to open the second quarter gave the Mavericks a 23-17 lead. Concordia tallied six straight points to tie the game up at 23-23 at the 8:20 mark. Mercy answered back with a 9-1 run, finished off by a Wall three, which put the Mavericks up 32-24 with 4:20 left in the opening half. The Clippers cut the deficit to four but a Barnard layup with 15 seconds left gave Mercy a 34-28 lead at halftime.

A Barnard three at the 8:03 mark of the third quarter gave the Mavericks a 37-30 lead. Concordia continued to battle and rallied with a 7-1 run to cut the deficit to one, 38-37, with 6:19 left in the third period. Mercy came back on a 9-0 run of their own to take a 47-37 lead with two minutes left in the frame and headed into the fourth quarter up, 49-39.

Mercy held a 54-45 lead following a Brown jumper at the 8:10 mark of the fourth quarter. The visitors ensued with a 7-0 run to trim the Maverick lead to two, 54-52, with 5:54 remaining. An Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) layup increased the lead back to four before a Shanice Graves jumper made it 56-54 in favor of Mercy with 2:38 left to play. Hall came down on the next possession and made a layup to make it 58-54 and following a Concordia technical foul Wall made two free throws to give Mercy a 60-54 lead with 2:11 on the clock. Hopkins connected on a layup at the 1:21 mark to get the guests within four, 60-56. After the teams traded possessions, Bender drew a foul with 33 seconds left and went 1-of-2 to make it 61-56. A turnover by the Clippers gave the ball back to Mercy and Wall made two more free throws to give Mercy a 63-56 lead with 22 seconds left. The Mavericks led the rest of the way and held on for their sixth straight win.

Mercy shot 32.3 percent (21-of-65) from the floor, 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from downtown and 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the foul line. Concordia shot 33.3 percent (23-of-69) from the field, 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from beyond the arc and 43.5 percent (10-of-23) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 55-43 edge on the glass.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, December 13th when they host Daemen at 5 p.m.
