DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 13, 2019) – Despite a team-high 14 points from freshman Katie Wall (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Roy C. Ketcham), the Mercy College women's basketball team opened up ECC play with a 68-48 loss to Daemen College on Friday night at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (6-4, 0-1 ECC) see their six-game winning streak come to an end, while the Wildcats (8-2, 2-0 ECC) have won three games in a row.
Wall went 5-of-11 from the field and had two assists. Sophomore Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had eight points and sophomore Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) finished with eight points and six rebounds. Senior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) and freshman Briana Barnard (Bethlehem, Pa./Bethlehem Catholic) both netted five points.
Daemen was led by Katie Titus who had a game-high 21 points.
The Wildcats scored the game's first eight points to take an 8-0 lead at the 8:08 mark of the opening quarter. Mercy stormed back with seven straight points of their own to cut the deficit to one, 8-7, following a Collier layup with 6:06 remaining in the period. Daemen closed the quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 17-7 lead after the first quarter.
Mercy started the second quarter on a 5-0 run, capped off by a Lake layup, which trimmed the Wildcats lead to five, 17-12, less than a minute into the quarter. Daemen responded with a 19-2 run to increase the lead to 22, 36-14, following a Titus three at the 3:30 mark. The Wildcats held a double-digit lead the rest of the half and headed into halftime up, 41-19.
Daemen began the third quarter on an 11-3 run to put the lead to 30, 52-22, with 7:24 left in the quarter and held a 61-32 lead after three quarters.
Mercy outscored the Wildcats 16-7 in the fourth quarter but it was not enough as Daemen came away with the win.
Mercy shot 31.1 percent (14-of-45) from the floor, 28.6 percent (4-of-14) from downtown and 84.2 percent (16-of-19) from the foul line. Daemen shot 41.5 percent (27-of-65) from the field, 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from beyond the arc and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the charity stripe. Daemen held a 46-26 edge on the glass.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, December 15th when they host Roberts Wesleyan in a CODA Awareness Game at 12 p.m.
