FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 13, 2019) – Despite three Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a, 92-76, decision to ECC foe Queens College on Wednesday night at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
The Mavericks (4-19, 1-12 ECC) have dropped two games in a row, while the Knights (5-17, 4-10 ECC) have won two of their last three games.
Junior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) led the way for the Mavericks with a double-double by way of a season-high 18 points and 11 rebounds on 8-of-13 shooting. Sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) produced 16 points and nine rebounds and freshman Brianne Santos (Elmont, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) had 11 points on 5-of-9 shooting. Junior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) concluded the night with nine points and five rebounds.
Queens was led by Beth Bonin who had a game-high 23 points.
The Knights started the game with a 12-2 lead at the 6:14 mark of the opening quarter and built the lead to 11, 16-5, at the 5:04 mark. The Mavericks clawed their way back and made it a seven-point game, 19-12, after an Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) three-point play. Queens answered with a 7-0 run to take their largest lead of the quarter, 26-12, and headed into the second quarter with a 28-16 lead.
The hosts began the second quarter on a 6-2 run to take a 34-18 lead with seven minutes left in the half. Mercy made it 38-24 following a Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) jumper at the 4:54 mark. Queens ensued with an 11-2 run to increase their lead to 23, 49-26, with two minutes remaining in the half. The Mavericks ended the half on a 7-2 run to head into halftime down, 51-33.
Queens put the lead back to 20, 61-41, with 5:33 on the clock in the third quarter. Mercy continued to battle and went on a 13-2 run, capped off by a Santos jumper, which cut the deficit to single digits, 63-54, with 2:37 on the clock. The Knights ended the quarter with four straight points to head into the fourth quarter up, 67-54.
The Knights outscored the Mavericks 25-22 in the fourth quarter to earn the victory and the season sweep.
Mercy shot 41.7 percent (30-of-72) from the floor, 10.5 percent (2-of-19) from beyond the arc and 73.7 percent (14-of-19) from the foul line. Queens shot 58.5 percent (38-of-65) from the field, 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from downtown and 64.7 percent (11-of-17) from the charity stripe. Mercy held a 41-35 edge on the glass and a 21-15 edge in second chance points.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, February 16th when they host Molloy for Senior Day at 12 p.m.
