DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2019) – Despite sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) and junior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a, 60-48, decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Victory Hall Sports Center.
In a ceremony prior to the game, senior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) was recognized for her contributions to the Mercy College women's basketball program.
The Mavericks (4-20, 1-13 ECC) have dropped three games in a row, while the Lions (9-16, 4-11 ECC) sweep the season series with Mercy.
Brown had a team-high 15 points with six rebounds and Collier posted 14 points and nine rebounds on 6-of-11 shooting. Perez posted five points and freshman Brianne Santos (Elmont, N.Y./Nazareth Regional) had five points.
Molloy was led by Ihnacinse Grady who had a game-high 21 points.
The Lions took a 5-0 lead at the 6:52 mark of the opening quarter. Mercy answered with a 6-0 run, capped off by two Brown free throws, to take a 6-5 lead with five minutes remaining in the quarter. Molloy responded with a 12-2 run to retake the lead at 17-8 with 1:19 left in the period. The Lions headed into the second quarter with a 19-11 lead.
Perez started the scoring in the second quarter to make it 19-13, but the Lions rattled off four straight points to take a 23-13 lead with eight minutes remaining in the half. Mercy made it a five-point game, 23-18, with 7:05 on the clock after a Santos three. Molloy ended the half on an 8-3 run to get into halftime with a 31-21 lead.
Molloy increased the lead to 13, 34-21, to start the third quarter and held a 12-point lead, 41-29, with 3:09 remaining in the frame. Mercy ensued with four straight points to make it an eight-point affair, 41-33, with 2:07 on the clock, but the Lions closed out the quarter with five of the final seven points to build a 46-35 lead after three quarters.
The guests started the final quarter by increasing the lead to 14, 51-37, with 5:23 left. The Mavericks came back with a 7-2 run, finished off by a Brown three, that got Mercy within nine, 53-44, with 2:55 remaining. However, that would be the closest the Mavericks could get as the Lions came away with the win.
Mercy shot 34.6 percent (18-of-52) from the floor, 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from downtown and 81.8 percent (9-of-11) from the foul line. Molloy shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from beyond the arc and 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 39-35 edge on the glass and Mercy held a 14-6 edge in bench points.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, February 20th when they host NYIT at 5 p.m.
