DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2019) – Despite a team-high 15 points from junior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College), the Mercy College women's basketball team suffered a 78-56 setback to ECC foe NYIT on Thursday night at the Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (4-21, 1-14 ECC) have dropped four games in a row, while the Bears (19-7, 11-5 ECC) sweep the season series.
Hall went 5-of-10 from the floor and had five rebounds. Freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) had 14 points and sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) posted six points and nine rebounds. Senior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) had six points and junior Abigail Collier (Watertown, Conn./Watertown) also netted six points.
NYIT was led by Ketsia Athias and Taylor Tripptree who both had a game-high 18 points.
The Bears opened the contest on an 11-2 run and headed into the second quarter with a 20-7 lead.
NYIT started the second quarter with three straight points to build a 16-point lead, 23-7, less than a minute in. Mercy answered with a 7-0 run, capped off by two Bender free throws, that made it 23-14 with 6:24 remaining in the quarter. The Bears responded with a 12-2 run to take their largest lead of the half, 35-16, and headed into halftime up, 38-19.
The visitors started the third quarter by increasing the lead to 23, 46-23, at the 7:24 mark. Mercy cut it to 19, 48-29, on a Hall layup, but the Bears ensued with an 8-2 run to take a 56-31 lead with 2:02 left in the period. The Mavericks battled back and made it a 20-point game, 59-39, at the end of the quarter following a Collier layup.
NYIT outscored the Mavericks 19-17 in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Mercy shot 33.3 percent (21-of-63) from the floor, 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from downtown and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the foul line. NYIT shot 45.6 percent (31-of-68) from the field, 35.7 percent (10-of-28) from beyond the arc and 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the charity stripe. NYIT held a 44-37 edge on the glass and 20-10 edge in second chance points.
Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, February 23rd when they play at LIU Post at 1:30 p.m.
