Four Mavericks Score in Double Figures as Women's Basketball Plays at LIU Post

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2019) – Despite four Mavericks scoring in double figures, the Mercy College women's basketball team dropped a 94-79 decision to ECC foe LIU Post on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (4-22, 1-15 ECC) have dropped five games in a row, while the Pioneers (16-11, 9-8 ECC) snap a five-game losing streak.

Sophomore Amber Brown (South Brunswick, N.J./South Brunswick) led the way with 22 points on 7-of-15 shooting with four assists. Senior Cynthia Perez (Middle Village, N.Y./Christ the King) added a career-high 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting and junior Destinee Hall (Spring Valley, N.Y./Keystone College) finished with 13 points and six rebounds. Freshman Alexis Lake (Lakeview, N.Y./Malverne) added 11 points and eight rebounds and freshman Taysha Bender (Glen Burnie, Md./Archbishop Spalding) produced nine points and eight assists.

LIU Post was led by Robyn Francis who had a game-high 24 points and Sasha Patterson who had 23 points and 12 rebounds.

The Pioneers opened the contest with the game's first nine points to take a 9-0 lead at the 7:09 mark of the first quarter. Following a Mercy timeout, the Mavericks scored four straight points to make it 9-4, but the hosts answered with an 11-2 run to take a 20-6 lead with 3:29 left in the period. LIU Post headed into the second quarter up 21-9 after holding Mercy to just 23.5 percent shooting in the quarter.

LIU Post held a 14-point lead, 31-17, with 6:55 left in the half. Mercy came back on an 8-0 run to make it 31-25 with 4:26 remaining in the half. The Pioneers ensued with a 10-3 run to increase the lead back to 13, 41-28, with 1:46 left in the half. The Mavericks ended the half on a 10-3 run, capped off by two Lake free throws, that got Mercy within six, 44-38, heading into halftime.

The Mavericks trailed by just six, 46-40, after a Lake layup with 8:20 left in the third quarter. The Pioneers went on a 7-0 run to build the lead back to 13, 53-40, with 5:40 on the clock and headed into the fourth quarter up, 68-55.

Mercy started the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run, finished off by a Bender jumper, that made it 70-62 with seven minutes remaining. The hosts finished the game off by going on a 9-3 run over the next three minutes that put the lead to 14, 79-65, with 4:18 left to play. A Perez three made it a ten-point game, 82-72, with 2:28 remaining, but an 8-1 run by the Pioneers built the lead to a game-high 17 points, 90-73, with 53 seconds left. LIU Post led by double digits the rest of the way to secure the win.

Mercy shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the floor, 50.0 percent (9-of-18) from downtown and 71.4 percent (20-of-28) from the foul line. LIU Post shot 49.3 percent (34-of-69) from the field, 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from beyond the arc and 67.9 percent (19-of-28) from the charity stripe. LIU Post held a 50-29 edge on the boards and a 28-12 edge in second chance points.

Head Coach Scott Lagas and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 1st when they play at Daemen at 6 p.m.
