Barbetto, Atkins and Griffin Score in Double Figures as Men's Basketball Hosts Molloy on Senior Day

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2019) – Despite seniors Sal Barbetto (New City, N.Y./Rockland CC) and Amir Atkins (Alexandria, Va./Hagerstown CC) and redshirt sophomore Bryan Griffin (Pomona, N.Y./Saint Joseph Regional) scoring in double figures, the Mercy College men's basketball team suffered a, 92-77, setback to ECC foe Molloy College on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at the Victory Hall Sports Center.

In a ceremony prior to the game, Barbetto and Atkins were recognized for their contributions to the Mercy College men's basketball program.

The Mavericks (6-16, 4-10 ECC) have dropped five games in a row, while the Lions (16-8, 12-3 ECC) have won two games in a row.

Griffin led the way with his 16th double-double of the year by way of 24 points and 14 rebounds with three blocks. Barbetto finished with 20 points and four assists and Atkins poured in 12 points. Junior Lamont Williams Jr. (Irvington, N.J./County College of Morris) posted eight points off the bench.

Molloy was led by Nick Corbett who had a game-high 25 points and Curtis Jenkins who nearly recorded a triple-double with 20 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists.

Mercy jumped out to an early 6-3 lead after a Barbetto layup at the 18:01 mark. Molloy answered back with a 12-3 run to take a 15-9 lead with 15:10 remaining in the half. An Atkins three at the 13:58 mark cut the Molloy lead to one, 17-16. However, the visitors responded with a 19-5 run to increase the lead to 15, 36-21, with 9:38 left in the first half.

The Mavericks battled back and went on a 14-2 run, capped off by a Williams three, which got Mercy within three, 38-35, with 5:47 on the clock. Following a Molloy timeout, the Lions went on an 8-0 run to put the lead to 11, 46-35, at the 3:52 mark.

Mercy later closed the gap to six, but the visitors ended the half on a 5-0 run to head into halftime up, 53-42.

The Mavericks came out of the break strong and started the half on a 15-6 run to make it a two-point game, 59-57, with 11:14 remaining. Molloy answered with a Steven Torre three on the other end to make it a five-point game. Mercy cut the deficit to three two more times with a Korey Lee (Huntington Station, N.Y/Trinity Pawling) layup at the 9:42 mark making it 64-61.

The Lions ensued with an 8-0 run to increase the lead to 11, 72-61, leading to a Mercy timeout with 8:17 left. A Williams layup with 5:29 remaining made it 75-68 in favor of Molloy. The Lions then went on a 12-1 run over the next two-plus minutes to take their largest lead of the game, 87-69, with 3:03 left to play. Molloy held a double-digit lead the rest of the way to secure the win.

Mercy shot 39.7 percent (29-of-73) from the floor, 31.3 percent (10-of-32) from downtown and 75.0 percent (9-of-12) from the foul line. Molloy shot 46.8 percent (36-of-77) from the field, 48.0 percent (12-of-25) from beyond the arc and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the charity stripe. Molloy held a 54-36 edge on the glass and a 27-13 edge in bench points.

Head Coach Michael Maczko and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, February 20th when they host NYIT at 7 p.m.
