MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (Feb. 21, 2019) – Despite a home run from senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Stonehill College on Thursday night in Myrtle Beach.
The Mavericks (1-4) fail to build off their win last time out, while the Skyhawks (1-0) open their season with a win.
Murphy went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) batted 1-for-4 and senior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 1-for-3. Junior James Jakuba (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Central Connecticut State University) pitched the first four innings with four runs allowed to take the loss.
Stonehill was led by Harrison Sabo who went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Michael Young tossed eight innings with no runs allowed to earn the win.
The Skyhawks opened the scoring with a run on three hits in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
Stonehill tacked on two more runs in the top of the second on three hits to take a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.
The Skyhawks added on runs in the third and seventh innings to build a 5-0 lead. Mercy finally got on the board in the top of the ninth when Murphy homered to make it 5-1. However, the Mavericks could only muster four hits in the game, giving Stonehill the 5-1 win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play No. 9 Southern New Hampshire in Myrtle Beach at 12 p.m.
