Gibbons Records Game-High Seven Points as No. 5/6 Men's Lacrosse Earns 13-9 Victory Over Saint Rose

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 24, 2019) – Powered by a game-high seven points from freshman Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham), the No. 5/6 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 13-9 victory over The College of Saint Rose on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (4-0) start 4-0 for the first time since 2013, while the Golden Knights (0-1) open their season with a loss.

Gibbons finished with a goal and six assists. Senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) posted three goals and one assist, recording his 100th career goal in the process. The senior becomes the third Maverick to achieve the mark. Freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) had three goals and senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) had two goals and two assists. Junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) finished with two goals and two assists and sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) netted two goals. Junior Bobby Norton (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and freshman Jake Fitzgerald (Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) both had a team-high three caused turnovers and junior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 7-of-18 on faceoffs. Senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) made 15 saves to earn his fourth win of the season.

Saint Rose was led by John Loughlin and Jordyn Marchiano who both recorded three goals. Matthew Gill made seven saves to take the loss.

Mercy opened the game with three straight goals to take a 3-0 lead at the 5:35 mark of the first quarter. MacSpadyen started the scoring with an unassisted goal and Jack Gibbons and Chillianis followed with man-up goals to bring the score to 3-0. Saint Rose closed out the quarter with two goals to make it 3-2 in favor of the Mavericks after one quarter.

The Mavericks broke open the game in the second quarter, scoring all four goals in the period to take a 7-2 lead at halftime. Chillianis began the rally with his 100th career goal and MacSpadyen, Janavey and Scorcia jumped into the goal column following assists from Gibbons that gave Mercy a five-goal lead at halftime.

Mercy carried over the momentum from the first half as Chillianis, Scorcia and Janavey all found the back of the net to make it 10-2 with 11:43 remaining in the third quarter. A Golden Knights goal made it 10-3, but McPartland and Janavey responded with back-to-back goals to increase the Mercy lead to a game-high nine goals, 12-3, with 8:42 left in the period. Saint Rose ended the quarter with three straight goals to make it 12-6 entering the fourth quarter.

A Carter Badour goal to start the final quarter made it 12-7, but McPartland ended the run with a goal from Chillianis to up the lead to six, 13-7, with 7:43 remaining. The Golden Knights scored the final two goals of the game, but the deficit proved too much to overcome.

Shots were tied at 41-41, Mercy held a 35-33 edge in ground balls and went 10-of-25 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 2nd when they host Southern N.H. at 2 p.m.
