DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 15, 2019) – Powered by five different Mavericks recording an RBI and senior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) earning the win on the mound, the Mercy College baseball team extended their win streak to four games with a 5-2 win over University of New Haven on Friday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-9) have won four games in a row and defeat the Chargers (6-5) who are ranked No. 3 in the latest NCBWA East Region Poll.
Junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) and freshmen Ethan McMenamy (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) and Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) all went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 1-for-4 with an RBI and senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 2-for-4. Seniors Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) both went 1-for-4 with a run scored. Tise went six innings with one earned run allowed and seven strikeouts to pick up his second win of the season. Juniors Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University) and Matteo Finocchi (Staatsburg, N.Y./FDR) each pitched a scoreless inning of relief and junior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his third save.
New Haven was led by James Myers who went 2-for-4 and Izaiya Mestre pitched 4.1 innings with five runs allowed to take the loss.
A pitcher's duel broke out early with neither team scoring in the game's first four innings. Mercy finally broke through in the top of the fifth with five runs on seven hits to take a 5-0 lead. Garcia led off the inning with a single and moved to third on a Hagerty ground-rule double. After a strikeout, McMenamy came through with an RBI single through the left side that scored Garcia to make it 1-0. Saltzman then stepped up and singled to shortstop allowing Hagerty to score to increase the lead to 2-0. Sadallah then singled to load the bases with one out. Mooradian recorded another single in the inning to plate McMenamy and make it 3-0. Murphy followed with a single to right field that scored Saltzman to increase the lead to 4-0. Senior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez brought in the final run of the run on a sacrifice to give Mercy a commanding 5-0 lead.
It remained 5-0 until the bottom of the seventh when New Haven scratched across two runs on two hits and a Maverick passed ball to make it 5-2.
However, the combination of Grullart, Finocchi and Hernandez would allow only one hit over the final three innings with six strikeouts to give Mercy the win.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, March 17th when they host New Haven for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
