DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 16, 2019) – Despite a team-high three goals from senior Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), the No. 13/14 Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped a 9-8 overtime decision to No. 16/23 Bentley University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-2) have dropped two games in a row to nationally-ranked teams, while the Falcons (3-0) remain unbeaten on the year.
Isnardi also had a game-high nine ground balls and ten draw controls. Sophomore Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had two goals, an assist and three caused turnovers and freshman Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a goal and two assists. Sophomore Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had a goal and an assist and junior Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) also scored. Freshman Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and senior Erin Dingman (Watertown, N.Y./Onondaga CC) both had three caused turnovers and sophomore Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a career-high 15 saves and four ground balls to take the loss.
Bentley was led by Julia Glavin who had four goals and an assist. Eliza Bresler made 17 saves to earn the win.
Mercy opened the game with three straight goals in the first ten minutes of action to take a 3-0 lead. Corace scored first and Grzelaczyk and Isnardi added free position goals to give Mercy the early lead.
A Christine Fish goal for Bentley made it 3-1, but Isnardi, Sanchez and Shimborske answered back with three straight goals to give Mercy a 6-1 lead with 12:41 left in the first half. The Falcons scored two goals before halftime to get within 6-3 heading into intermission.
Glavin made it 6-4 with a tally at the 24:36 mark of the second half. Shimborske netted her second of the game off an assist from Grzelaczyk to make it 7-4 with 15 minutes remaining. Bentley went on to score three unanswered goals to tie the game up at 7-7 with 6:52 left to play in regulation.
Isnardi netted her third goal of the game to give Mercy an 8-7 lead with 5:46 on the clock. Bentley tied the game up with four seconds on the clock in regulation following a goal by Caroline Boudreau.
The teams headed to overtime tied at 8-8 and Glavin would score the game-winning goal on a free position shot just 54 seconds into the overtime period.
Shots were tied at 30-30 and Mercy held a 27-26 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, March 20th when they play at Georgian Court at 3:30 p.m.
