DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 20, 2019) – Despite an RBI from freshman Ethan McMenamy (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Nyack College on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-10) see their six-game winning streak come to an end, while the Warriors (4-9-1) have won three games in a row.
McMenamy went 1-for-4 with an RBI and freshman Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 3-for-4. Senior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 2-for-4 and seniors Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) and Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 1-for-3. Senior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 1-for-2 and sophomore Paul Cozzolino (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) and freshman Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) both went 1-for-4. Senior Odalis Perez (New York, N.Y./Sullivan CC) faced two batters in the ninth to take the loss. Junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University) made the start on the mound and pitched 2.0 scoreless innings. Sophomores Shane Epps (Queens, N.Y./St. Michael's College), Demetri Mesimeris (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and Manuel Sanchez (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) and senior Alonso Tenya (Lima, Peru/Westchester CC) combined to toss five scoreless innings.
Nyack was led by Austin Fischer who went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Chase Morris tossed a complete game with two runs allowed to pick up the win.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the third when Nyack scored a run on two hits to take a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors added on another run in the top of the fourth when David Gauthier recorded a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0.
It remained 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when Mercy scored two runs on four hits to tie the game up at 2-2. Garcia and Hagerty led off the inning with back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Cozzolino then singled to load the bases for McMenamy. McMenamy recorded an RBI single that scored Garcia to make it 2-1. The final run of the inning would come on a double play that allowed Hagerty to score to tie the game up.
The game stayed tied at 2-2 heading to the ninth inning. Gabriel Vasquez led off the inning with a single and stole second. After a walk and double steal, Herman Alvarado drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly to center field that made it 3-2.
Saltzman reached first in the bottom of the ninth on a single, but was left stranded at second to end the game.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, March 22nd when they host Queens at 3 p.m.
