MacSpadyen Records Game-High Seven Points as No. 3 Men's Lacrosse Defeats Chestnut Hill, 12-7

LAFAYETTE HILL, Pa. (Mar. 26, 2019) – Powered by a game-high seven points from senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College), the No. 3 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 12-7 victory over Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday afternoon.

The Mavericks (10-0) have won ten games in a row and continue their best start in school history, while the Griffins (3-4) fall below .500 on the year.

MacSpadyen had three goals, four assists and recorded his 200th career point and senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) had three goals each. Junior Anthony DeVito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) had two goals and four ground balls and freshman Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had a goal and an assist. Sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) and junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had an assist and junior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) had eight ground balls and went 15-of-22 on faceoffs. Senior Anthony DeCeglia (Northport, N.Y./Nassau CC) finished with six ground balls and five caused turnovers and senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling) made four saves to earn the win.

Chestnut Hill was led by Casey Brown who had a game-high four goals. Stephen Hogan Jr. made 14 saves to take the loss.

The teams traded goals in the first quarter to make it 1-1 after one quarter of play. Janavey scored a man-up goal at the 12:00 mark to start the scoring before a Brown goal with 10:26 on the clock tied things up.

Mercy opened the second quarter with two straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with 7:38 left in the half. Chillianis and Janavey both found the back of the net before a Scott Wilden goal made it 3-2 with 6:54 remaining in the quarter. MacSpadyen closed out the scoring with a goal at the 5:20 mark to give Mercy a 4-2 lead at halftime.

Chillianis, MacSpadyen and DeVito started the third quarter with goals to put the Mavericks up 7-2 with 7:38 left in the period. Brown scored his second of the day to make it 7-3, but Chillianis and MacSpadyen scored again to give Mercy a 9-3 lead after three quarters.

DeVito began the fourth quarter with his second of the day to make it 10-3 before two straight goals from the Griffins brought the score to 10-5 with 9:24 left to play. Gibbons and Janavey each tallied one more goal and the Mavericks held on for the win despite being outscored 4-3 in the final quarter.

Mercy held a 42-23 edge in shots and a 36-22 advantage in ground balls. Mercy won 16-of-23 faceoffs and went 3-of-9 on man-up opportunities.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 30th when they play at District of Columbia at 2:30 p.m.
