WASHINGTON, D.C. (Mar. 30, 2019) – Powered by ten different Mavericks scoring, the No. 3 Mercy College men's lacrosse team earned a 17-9 victory over ECC foe University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon.
The Mavericks (11-0, 3-0 ECC) remain perfect on the year and continue the best start in program history, while the Firebirds (4-4, 0-2 ECC) remain winless in ECC play.
Senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) had a team-high five points on four goals and an assist and sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) had three goals and two assists. Senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had two goals and an assist and junior Anthony DeVito (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) scored twice. Freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y./Lakeland) had a goal and an assist and sophomore Sean Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) also had a goal and an assist. Senior Luke Baron (Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor), juniors Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) and freshman Joe Poggio (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) also scored and seniors Matthew DeFeo (Upper Brookville, N.Y./St. Dominic's) and Erik Badger (Fayetteville, N.Y./Onondaga CC) had an assist. Junior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 6-of-14 on faceoffs and senior Nick Sehring (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) went 6-of-11 on faceoffs. Senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) played the first 35:52 in goal and made two saves to earn the win. Junior Matthew Prasenski (Rockaway Park, N.Y./Xaverian) played 20:52 minutes and freshmen Thomas Umano (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and Joe Tortorella (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey) played the final 15:00 minutes with a combined five saves.
UDC was led by Alan Singleton who had a team-high four goals and an assist. Nikolas Lund-Murray made 15 saves to take the loss.
Mercy jumped all over the Firebirds, taking a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and 11-0 lead at halftime. Janavey opened the scoring at the 10:20 mark of the first quarter, off an assist from Chillianis, to make it 1-0. Chillianis and MacSpadyen both tallied two goals apiece to bring the score to 5-0 with 2:18 left in the first quarter. Baron and Scorcia recorded the final two goals of the first quarter to give Mercy a commanding 7-0 lead after one quarter of play.
MacSpadyen opened the scoring in the second quarter at the 7:26 mark to make it 8-0 before Poggio made it 9-0 just under two minutes later. MacSpadyen and McPartland closed out the half with two unassisted goals to give Mercy an 11-0 lead at halftime.
UDC finally got on the board with two straight goals to begin the third quarter, making it 11-2. DeVito and Stockton answered back with two man-up goals to give Mercy a 13-2 edge with 11:39 left in the third period. The Firebirds tallied four unanswered goals to get within 13-6 with 7:03 remaining in the quarter. Cortese netted an unassisted goal to end the run before two goals by UDC in the final minute of play in the quarter made it 14-8 after three quarters.
Singleton made it 14-9 less than a minute into the fourth quarter. However, two goals from Scorcia and another from DeVito gave the Mavericks a 17-9 lead with 2:13 left and they held on for the win.
Mercy held a 45-31 edge in shots and UDC held a 20-11 edge in ground balls. Mercy went 12-of-27 on faceoffs and 3-of-11 on man-up opportunities.
Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, April 2nd when they host Dominican at 3 p.m.
