Mooradian Drives in Two Runs as Baseball Visits Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Mar. 29, 2019) – Despite a team-high two RBI from junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro), the Mercy College baseball team dropped an 8-3 decision to ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Friday afternoon at Seaside Park.

The Mavericks (10-14, 2-3 ECC) have dropped four of their last five games, while the Purple Knights (7-14, 4-1 ECC) have won four games in a row.

Mooradian went 2-for-4 with two RBI and senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 2-for-4 and sophomore Paul Cozzolino (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) and senior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) both recorded a hit. Senior Kevin Tise (New York, N.Y./University of Hartford) tossed 6.0 innings with one earned run allowed and ten strikeouts to take the loss.

Bridgeport was led by Alex Rauso who went 1-for-4 with three RBI and a home run. Anthony Martino pitched 5.0 innings with three runs allowed to pick up the win. Andrew Oswald pitched the final four innings to earn the save.

The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the second when Bridgeport scored seven runs on five hits and three Mercy errors to take a 7-0 lead. Cory Listing drove in Conall Roberts who reached on an error to make it 2-0. Matt Rodriguez singled home Listing to make it 3-0 and Ryan Donnelly recorded an RBI single to right field to make it 4-0. Rauso put the finishing touches on the inning with a three-run home run to left field which made it 7-0.

Mercy answered in the top of the third when Saltzman singled and later came around to score on a Murphy RBI single to right field. The Mavericks added on two more runs in the top of the fourth to bring the score to 7-3. Ortiz Sanchez and Cozzolino led off the inning with singles before Saltzman added another single to load the bases with one out. After a strikeout, Mooradian delivered a two-run single to left field that scored Ortiz Sanchez and Cozzolino. A groundout ended the threat and inning.

Bridgeport tacked on a run in the seventh inning to take an 8-3 lead and they held on for the win.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Bridgeport for a doubleheader at 12 p.m.
