Corace and Isnardi Record Game-High-Tying Five Points as No. 14/17 Women's Lacrosse Defeats Bridgeport, 19-5

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Apr. 16, 2019) – Powered by a game-high-tying five points from sophomore Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and senior Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), the No. 14/17 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 19-5 victory over ECC foe University of Bridgeport on Tuesday night.

The Mavericks (11-4, 5-1 ECC) have won three games in a row, while the Purple Knights (7-6, 2-3 ECC) have dropped three games in a row.

Corace posted four goals and an assist and Isnardi had a game-high five goals, 14 draw controls and three caused turnovers. Isnardi recorded her 100th career caused turnover and had two ground balls. Junior Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) had four goals and junior Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North) and freshman Kayla Reese (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) both had two goals and an assist. Sophomore Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal and two assists and junior Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) had a goal and an assist. Senior Erin Dingman (Watertown, N.Y./Onondaga CC), sophomore Brooke Anthony (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and freshman Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had an assist. Freshman Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had a game-high eight ground balls with two caused turnovers. Sophomore Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) made five saves in the first 47:33 to earn the win. Freshman Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made one save in the final 12:27.

Bridgeport was led by Barbara Orsini who had two goals and an assist. Cheyanne Gangel made nine saves to take the loss.

The Mavericks scored the first eight goals of the contest, taking an 8-0 lead with 5:44 left in the opening half. Sanchez, Isnardi and Corace scored Mercy's first three goals in less than two minutes of action. Sanchez tallied two more and Corace netted another to increase the Mavericks lead to 6-0 at the 13:58 mark of the opening half.

Isnardi then tallied back-to-back goals to put Mercy up 8-0. Bridgeport recorded two goals in a row to make it 8-2 before Shimborske closed out the half with a goal to give Mercy a 9-2 lead at halftime.

Corace and Isnardi found the back of the net again to open the second half, giving Mercy a commanding 11-2 lead with 27:36 remaining. The Purple Knights answered with two consecutive goals to make it 11-4, but the Mavericks put the game away with eight straight goals to build a 19-4 lead with 9:33 left to play. Isnardi started the run at the 23:30 mark and Sanchez netted another before Reese and Mackie scored their first goals of the day to make it 15-4.

Corace netted her final goal of the day to give Mercy a 16-4 lead, Sergio tallied her two goals and Reese netted her second of the day to put the game out of reach. Orsini scored the final Bridgeport goal with 11 seconds, but time would run out on the Purple Knights.

Mercy held a 33-20 edge in shots, a 22-18 edge in ground balls and 20-5 advantage in draw controls.

Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 20th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 11 a.m.
