Seven Different Mavericks Record an RBI as Baseball Earns 10-10 Tie With Bloomfield

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 16, 2019) – Powered by seven different Mavericks recording an RBI, the Mercy College baseball team earned a 10-10 tie with Bloomfield College on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field. The game was called after nine innings due to darkness.

The Mavericks (14-22-1) finish with their first tie since March 2, 2013 against Adelphi, while the Bears (12-28-1) earn their first tie of the season.

Junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) led Mercy going 2-for-6 with a team-high two RBI and senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) went 1-for-6 with an RBI and senior Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Rafael Perez (Yonkers, N.Y./Corning CC) batted 1-for-2 with an RBI and freshman James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Sophomore Nicholas Pellegrino (Garden City Park, N.Y./Concordia College) went 1-for-1 with an RBI and freshman Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 2-for-3. Senior Fernando Figueroa (Bayamon, P.R./Monroe College) made the start on the mound and went 1.2 innings with four runs allowed to take a no-decision. Sophomore Manuel Sanchez (Ossining, N.Y./Ossining) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and junior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched 1.1 scoreless innings.

Bloomfield was led by Javell Barnes who went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on four walks. The Mavericks answered by tying the game up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first. Sadallah doubled to lead off the inning and later stole home to even the score up.

Bloomfield scored three more runs in the top of the second to take a 4-1 lead. Mercy inched closer with two runs in the bottom of the second to make it 4-3. Saltzman singled with two outs and Sadallah followed with another single to put runners on first and third. Mooradian then doubled to score both Saltzman and Sadallah.

The Mavericks tied the game up at 4-4 in the bottom of the third when Ortiz Sanchez doubled and later came around to score on a Dieguez triple to right center. The Bears retook the lead in the top of the fourth with a run on two hits.

Mercy took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to make it 7-5. Mooradian reached on an error by the second baseman and advanced to second. After a passed ball, Murphy brought Mooradian home with an RBI single to right field and moved to second following an error by the right fielder. Ortiz Sanchez then delivered an RBI double to center field that scored Murphy and Perez later brought home Ortiz Sanchez on a sacrifice fly to conclude the scoring in the inning.

It remained 7-5 until the sixth inning when Mercy tallied three more runs to make it 10-5. Perez and Dieguez singled to start the rally and Perez later scored on an error by the catcher. Pellegrino plated Dieguez with an RBI single to right center and Sadallah scored Pellegrino with a single to left field to give Mercy a five-run lead.

Bloomfield scored two runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to tie the game up at 10-10 after eight innings. Neither team could score in the ninth inning and the game was called after nine innings due to darkness with the game tied at 10-10.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 18th when they host St. Thomas Aquinas at 3 p.m.
