Mooradian Records Team-High 10 RBI as Baseball Sweeps Lincoln

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2019) – Powered by a team-high ten RBI on the day from junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro), the Mercy College baseball team earned 23-4 and 23-7 victories over ECC foe Lincoln University on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (19-23-1, 11-11 ECC) have their most ECC wins since 2010 and have won four games in a row. The 23 runs scored in both games are the most since a 23-4 victory over Stonehill on February 25, 2016. Mercy currently sits in a tie for third in the ECC standings with the top four making the ECC Tournament, while the Lions (1-34, 0-22 ECC) remain winless in ECC play.

Game 1: Mercy 23, Lincoln 4

Lincoln jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but the lead did not last long as the Mavericks scored nine runs in the bottom of the first to take a 9-2 lead. Mooradian started the scoring with an RBI double. Senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) then hit an RBI single and senior Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) brought home the third run of the inning on an RBI single to left field. A bases-loaded walk and groundout scored two more runs before Mooradian added two more RBI in the inning on a double to center field. Murphy brought in the final run of the inning on a groundout to first to make it 9-2.

Senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) led off the third inning with a home run to make it 10-2 and junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University) and senior Nicolas Hagerty (New York, N.Y./Westchester CC) recorded RBI in the fourth inning to give Mercy a 12-2 lead.

A three-run triple from Grullart in the fifth inning gave Mercy a commanding 15-2 lead.

Lincoln tallied two runs in the seventh inning to bring the score to 15-4. The Mavericks answered with six runs in the seventh inning to build a 21-4 lead. Junior Rafael Perez (Yonkers, N.Y./Corning CC) recorded a two-run single for the first runs of the inning and sophomore Zak Kain (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) produced an RBI single to right field which concluded the scoring in the inning.

Mercy added two more runs in the eighth inning and did not allow a run in the ninth to earn the victory.

Mooradian went 4-for-6 with four RBI and set a new single-season record for hits in a season, surpassing the record of 62 set by John Armento in 1989. Murphy went 1-for-4 with two RBI, including his 100th career RBI, and Sadallah went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Grullart went 4-for-4 with four RBI and Garcia went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior James Jakuba (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./Central Connecticut State University) pitched 5.0 innings with two runs allowed to pick up the win.

Lincoln was led by Malcolm Smith who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Ronald Gibbs pitched 1.0 inning to take the loss.

Game 2: Mercy 23, Lincoln 7

Mercy took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a Mooradian RBI single and Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) sacrifice fly. The Mavericks increased the lead to 4-0 in the second inning with two runs on a hit and an error.

The Mavericks took a commanding 13-0 lead after three innings of play with nine runs in the third inning. Grullart started the scoring with an RBI single, Garcia later scored on an error and freshman James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) plated the third run of the inning on a double. Sadallah and Mooradian recorded back-to-back RBI singles and Murphy hit a three-run home run. Grullart brought home the final run of the inning on an RBI single to right center.

Lincoln scored two runs in the sixth to make it 13-2 before Mooradian notched another RBI single in the sixth inning to make it 14-2. Lincoln scored two more runs in the seventh inning to get within 14-4.

The Mavericks broke the game open in the seventh inning with seven runs, increasing the lead to 21-4. Dieguez netted a two-run triple and Mooradian plated two more runs with a single to center field. Murphy recorded another RBI single and freshman Justin Renauto (Valhalla, N.Y./Valhalla) drove in the final run of the inning on a groundout to first.

The Lions scored a run in the eighth before Mercy tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 23-5. Sophomore Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) recorded an RBI single and Mooradian brought in his final run of the day on a fielder's choice.

Lincoln tallied two more runs in the ninth, but Mercy held on for the win.

Mooradian went 5-for-7 with six RBI and set a new single-season school record for RBI, surpassing the previous mark of 45 set by Anthony Fiorino in 1989. Murphy went 2-for-6 with four RBI and Dieguez went 3-for-4 with three RBI. Grullart went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Sadallah went 2-for-5 with an RBI. Freshman Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) pitched 6.0 innings and had a no-hitter going into the sixth inning to earn his first collegiate win.

Lincoln was led by Jordan Whisler who went 1-for-2 with a home run. Trevon Sutton pitched 2.2 innings to take the loss.

Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they host Lincoln at 12 p.m.
