DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 3, 2019) – Despite a team-high two RBI and four hits from senior Anthony Murphy (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 23-9 decision to Adelphi University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (11-17) have dropped three games in a row, while the Panthers (16-5) have won two games in a row.
Murphy went 4-for-5 with two RBI and freshman Ryan Saltzman (Old Bethpage, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) went 1-for-4 with an RBI. Sophomore Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) went 1-for-2 with an RBI and freshman Austin DeRosa (Seymour, Conn./Seymour) went 1-for-5 with an RBI. Junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University) went 2-for-5 with two runs and senior Fernando Figueroa (Bayamon, P.R./Monroe College) made the start on the mound with 4.1 innings pitched to earn a no-decision. Senior Alonso Tenya (Lima, Peru/Westchester CC) pitched 1.0 inning to take the loss. Sophomore Carmine Szynal (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) allowed no earned runs in 2.0 innings.
Adelphi was led by Lucas Terwilliger who went 2-for-4 with five RBI. Kieran McLaughlin pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the win.
After a scoreless first inning, Adelphi took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Mercy battled back and scored four runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. Grullart singled and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) singled to put runners on first and third. Saltzman followed with an RBI single that scored Grullart to make it 2-1. Murphy then singled through the right side to score Sadallah, tying the game up at 2-2. Freshman Ethan McMenamy (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills West) later drew a bases-loaded walk to give Mercy a 3-2 lead and Murphy scored the final run of the inning after a Panther error.
Adelphi retook the lead in the top of the fifth with four runs to take a 6-4 lead. Mercy tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth when DeRosa recorded an RBI single and freshman James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) scored on an error to make it 6-6.
The Panthers took the lead for good in the top of the sixth with three runs, building a 9-6 lead. Adelphi exploded for nine runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to take a 23-6 lead. Mercy scored three runs in the eighth inning on a Jocelyn RBI single, Murphy RBI single and Zak Kain (Dingmans Ferry, Pa./Delaware Valley) hit by pitch with the bases loaded. However, it was not enough and Adelphi came away with the win.
