Scorcia Has Game-High Seven Points as No. 3 Men's Lacrosse Sets New School Record for Wins in a Season With First-Ever Win at NYIT

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2019) – Powered by a game-high seven points from sophomore Dominic Scorcia (Franklin Square, N.Y./Carey), the No. 3 Mercy College men's lacrosse team set a new school record for wins in a season following a 20-7 victory over ECC foe NYIT on Saturday afternoon.

The Mavericks (13-0, 4-0 ECC) surpass the previous record of 12 wins set in 2017 and defeat the Bears (2-10, 0-1 ECC) for the first time since 2011. Mercy also wins at NYIT for the first time in program history.

Scorcia had a game-high five goals with two assists, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Senior Bobby Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had three goals and two assists and freshman Jack Gibbons (North Bellmore, N.Y./Mepham) had three goals and two assists. Senior Ryan MacSpadyen (Toronto, Ontario/Seneca College) had two goals and three assists and freshman Joe Poggio (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) had three goals. Freshman JoJo Janavey (Shrub Oak, N.Y/Lakeland) had two goals and an assist and senior Eric Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y./Nassau CC) had a goal and an assist. Junior Tommy McPartland (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) also scored and senior Erik Badger (Fayetteville, N.Y./Onondaga CC) and junior Joe Cortese (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Lakeland) dished out an assist. Junior Antonio Rey (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) went 17-of-22 on faceoffs with four ground balls and senior Ryan Gibbons (Seaford, N.Y./Dowling College) had nine saves in 50:02 minutes of work to pick up the win.

NYIT was led by Matt Murphy who had a team-high three goals. John DeFeo made 15 saves to take the loss.

Scorcia and Gibbons opened the scoring to give Mercy a 2-0 lead with 12:44 left in the first quarter. The Bears answered with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead at the 8:38 mark of the opening quarter. MacSpadyen, Janavey and Scorcia ended the quarter with goals to put the Mavericks ahead 5-3 after one quarter of play.

Mercy jumped all over the Bears in the second quarter with ten straight goals to take a 15-3 lead with 1:46 left in the half. MacSpadyen, Scorcia, Gibbons, Poggio and Chillianis started the run to give Mercy a 10-3 lead with 5:49 on the clock. Poggio then followed with two more goals to make it 12-3 and Marzocca, Chillianis and Gibbons closed out the scoring to give Mercy a 12-goal lead. A late goal by the Bears made it 15-4 at halftime.

The Mavericks continued to dominate in the third quarter as Scorcia scored twice and Janavey added another to put Mercy ahead 18-4 with eight minutes left in the third quarter. NYIT scored two straight goals to make it 18-6 before McPartland ended the period with a man-up goal to bring the score to 19-6 after three quarters.

Chillianis netted a man-up goal in the fourth quarter and NYIT scored one more goal, but it was not enough as Mercy cruised to the win.

Mercy held a 54-33 edge in shots, a 32-21 edge in ground balls and went 20-of-28 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 13th when they host Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
