DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2019) – Despite a game-high five goals from junior Brittani Sergio (Lake Grove, N.Y./Sachem North), the No. 15 Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped an 18-17 decision to ECC foe No. 5/11 LIU Post on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (8-4, 3-1 ECC) drop their first ECC game of the year, while the Pioneers (10-2, 5-0 ECC) remain perfect in ECC play.
Sergio also added two draw controls and junior Katherine Sanchez (Freeport, N.Y./Freeport) had four goals. Senior Hunter Isnardi (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) had three goals, three draw controls and recorded her 200th career ground ball and sophomore Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) had two goals and an assist. Junior Mary Mackie (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) had two goals and sophomore Casey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a goal and two assists. Freshman Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had an assist and freshman Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had a team-high three caused turnovers. Sophomore Emma Jacobsen (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) made 11 saves to take the loss.
LIU Post was led by Brianna Feldman who had a team-high four goals. Hailey Duchnowski made 13 saves to earn the win.
Isnardi opened the scoring with a goal less than a minute in to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. LIU Post answered with three straight goals to take a 3-1 lead with 25 minutes left in the first half. Sanchez scored to make it 3-2 just 17 seconds later.
Alyssa Mallery and Isnardi traded goals to bring the score to 4-3 with 17:37 remaining in the first half. Three unanswered goals from LIU Post gave the visitors a 7-3 lead with 14:37 on the clock. Mercy did not back down and responded with three straight goals to make it 7-6 with 10:21 left in the half. Sanchez scored twice and Isnardi scored another to get the Mavericks within a goal.
The Pioneers followed with three consecutive goals to build a 10-6 lead at the 4:40 mark. Shimborske scored a late goal to make it 10-7 heading into halftime.
The Mavericks came out in the second half on fire and scored the first three goals to tie the game at 10-10 with 24:09 remaining after goals from Corace, Mackie and Sergio. The Pioneers answered right back with five straight goals to retake the lead at 15-10 with 19:36 left to play. Sanchez and Sergio traded goals with Sara Stephens and Trish Brisotti to bring the score to 17-12 with 14:20 remaining
LIU Post looked to be in full control, but the Mavericks had other ideas and rallied with five straight goals to tie the game up at 17-17 with 2:35 left. Corace started the run, Sergio added three goals and Mackie tallied her second of the game to tie the game up again.
Brisotti answered for LIU Post at the 2:02 mark to give the Pioneers an 18-17 lead. A late Mercy shot would be stopped by Duchnowski to give the Pioneers the win.
LIU Post held a 36-32 edge in shots and Mercy held a 16-14 edge in ground balls. LIU Post held a 20-15 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Thursday, April 11th when they play at Millerville at 4 p.m.
