UNIONDALE, N.Y. (May 6, 2019) – Despite a hit and seven innings pitched from junior Luis Grullart (New York, N.Y./Delaware State University), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 1-0 decision to ECC foe Molloy College on Monday night in their season finale at Mitchel Field.
The Mavericks (21-27-1, 13-15 ECC) end their season with four straight losses and fall one game shy of qualifying for the ECC Tournament for the first time since 2010. Mercy records 20-plus victories in back-to-back seasons for the first time in program history and ties for the most ECC wins in program history. Mercy also finishes with their highest winning percentage (.464) in ECC play in program history and best winning percentage overall (.439) since 1991. The Lions (17-27, 14-14 ECC) sweep the four-game series and just miss out on qualifying for the ECC Tournament.
Grullart went 1-for-4 and pitched 7.0 innings with one run allowed to take the loss. Seniors Miguel Ortiz Sanchez (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College) and Adonis Garcia (Bronx, N.Y./Monroe College), junior John Mooradian (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) and sophomore Kuzari Jocelyn (Brooklyn, N.Y./Abraham Lincoln) also recorded a hit. Junior Andrew Hernandez (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. John's University) pitched a scoreless inning of relief.
Molloy was led by Nick Marino who went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Billy Wildeman pitched a complete-game shutout to earn the win.
The Lions scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the first on a Marino sacrifice fly that scored James Messina who led off the inning with a single.
Mercy had their best chance to tie the game in the eighth inning. Mooradian singled and stole second before advancing to third on an error. A walk by senior Joseph Sadallah (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville) put runners on first and third, but a fly out to centerfield ended the threat.
Garcia singled in the ninth inning for the Mavericks, but was left stranded to end the game.
