DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2019) – Powered by a near triple-double from junior Natalia Garcia (Vega Baja, P.R./Turabo University, the Mercy College volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-13) victory over Dominican College on Tuesday night at Victory Hall Sports Center.
The Mavericks (3-2) start 3-2 for the first time since 2013, while the Chargers (0-3) remain winless on the year.
Garcia finished with eight kills, 17 assists and nine digs. Senior Imani DeBose (Carson, Calif./The College of New Rochelle) had a match-high 12 kills and sophomore Selma Vulic (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) had six kills and a match-high 11 digs.
Dominican was led by Deanna Knopf who had nine kills and eight digs.
The opening set saw the Chargers take an early 14-8 lead. Mercy later trailed 17-12 but would end the set on a 13-2 run to take the first set, 25-19. DeBose had five kills in the set and Garcia added four kills of her own as Mercy hit .303 in the frame.
The two teams were tied at 10-10 in the second set. Mercy finished strong again and closed out the set on a 15-2 run to take the second set, 25-12. The Mavericks used three kills from DeBose and three from Vulic to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Mercy continued to dominate in the third set, taking an early 8-1 lead after back-to-back aces from senior Jessica Berka (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Dominic). The Mavericks held on the rest of the way using four kills from DeBose to secure the match in straight sets.
Mercy had 38 kills, 42 digs and hit .303, while Dominican had 18 kills, 32 digs and hit -.022.
Head Coach Georgia Efthalitsides and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 14th when they face Assumption at Stonehill at 1:30 p.m.
