Seara Scores Game-Winning Goal in 6th Minute to Lead Women's Soccer to First-Ever Win Over Adelphi

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2019) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 6th minute of action from senior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned their first-ever win over Adelphi University with a 1-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-1) have won two games in a row, while the Panthers (1-1) drop their first game of the season.

Seara had a goal on two shots on goal and sophomore Sydney Cooper (Long Beach, Calif./Los Alamitos) dished out an assist. Junior Kaitlyn Denning (Peoria, Ariz./Mountain Ridge) also had a shot on goal and junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made seven saves to post a shutout.

Adelphi was led by Alexsis Weiser who had a game-high four shots on goal. Krista Aliscio made two saves to take the loss.

Mercy wasted little time on getting on the scoreboard as Seara scored in the 6th minute of action to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Senior Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) started the play with a corner kick and Cooper later fed the ball to Seara who found the back of the net to give Mercy the early lead.

Seara followed with another shot on goal in the 20th minute, but Aliscio made the save to keep the score at 1-0. Torres made four saves in the first half and Mercy was aided by a team save to keep the Panthers off the board. The Mavericks headed into halftime up 1-0 with Adelphi holding a 9-2 edge in shots.

The second half saw Torres make three more saves and the defense come up with another team save to keep the game at 1-0. Mercy held on for the win despite being outshot 17-5 on the day.

Adelphi held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Sunday, September 15th when they play at Wilmington at 1 p.m.
