NEWARK, Del. (Sept. 15, 2019) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 108th minute of double-overtime from senior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 1-0 victory over Wilmington University on Sunday afternoon at WU Athletics Complex.
The Mavericks (3-1) have won three games in a row, while the Wildcats (1-2) have dropped two games in a row.
Seara recorded her second consecutive game-winning goal and now has two goals on the year. Senior Natalia Elizarraras (Whittier, Calif./Los Altos) had a team-high two shots and junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made one save to post a shutout.
Wilmington was led by Cassidy McErlain who had a game-high four shots and Emily Camp made three saves to take the loss.
The opening half saw both teams record a shot on goal, but both goalkeepers made a save to keep the game scoreless heading into halftime.
Camp made a save in the 56th minute and a Sammie Bennett shot hit the post for Wilmington in the 69th minute. Camp made another stop in the 75th minute on an Elizarraras shot to keep the game scoreless at the end of regulation.
The first overtime period saw neither team record a shot so another overtime period was needed.
The score remained 0-0 heading to the final minutes of the game when Seara dribbled down the right side of the field and cut back, finishing near the right post, to give the Mavericks a 1-0 victory on the road in double overtime.
Wilmington held a 9-8 edge in shots and Mercy held an 11-6 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 21st when they host Queens in a CODA Awareness Game at 12 p.m.
