DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2019) – Powered by the game-winning goal in the 69th minute from senior Mackenzie Warner (Athens, Pa./Corning CC), off an assist from senior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), the Mercy College women's soccer team opened up ECC play with a 1-0 victory over Queens College in a CODA Awareness Game on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (4-1, 1-0 ECC) have won four games in a row, while the Knights (3-3, 0-1 ECC) see their two-game winning streak come to an end.
Warner scored her first goal of the season on two shots on goal and Seara added her second assist. Junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made four saves to post the shutout win.
Queens was led by Victoria Ramirez who had a team-high two shots on goal. Shenae Kreps made seven saves to take the loss.
Mercy held a 9-1 edge in shots in the first half, but Kreps made three saves and Torres added another to keep the game scoreless at halftime.
The second half saw Torres make two early saves to keep the game at 0-0. The Mavericks finally broke through in the 69th minute when Seara sent a cross from right to left and Warner fired it into the back of the net to put Mercy up 1-0.
Torres made one final save in the 78th minute but Queens could not find the equalizer to give Mercy the victory.
Mercy held a 21-4 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Tuesday, September 24th when they host Holy Family at 3 p.m.
