DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 24, 2019) – Powered by the game-winning goal in overtime from senior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst), the Mercy College women's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Holy Family University on Tuesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (5-1) have won five games in a row, while the Tigers (1-3) fail to build off their first win.
Seara scored twice and now has a team-high four goals on the year. Junior goalkeeper Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada) made three saves to earn the win.
Holy Family was led by Casey Brown who scored a goal. Alayna McSeed made five saves to take the loss.
Torres made three early saves in the first 16 minutes of action to keep the game scoreless. Senior Mackenzie Warner (Athens, Pa./Corning CC) recorded the first Mercy shot on goal in the 23rd minute that was stopped by McSeed. Holy Family scored first in the 28th minute when Brown fired a shot from outside the box into the back of the net after a Maverick turnover to make it 1-0.
The Mavericks finished with four more shots on goal in the first half, but McSeed made three more stops and a team save kept Mercy off the board heading into halftime.
The second half saw a sophomore Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) shot hit the crossbar in the 55th minute. Mercy finally scored in the 59th minute when Seara made her way through the Tiger defense and fired a shot into the lower right corner to tie the game up at 1-1. Mercy continued to apply pressure the rest of regulation but could not score sending the game into overtime.
After four minutes of scoreless action in the first overtime period, Seara gave the Mavericks the win in the 95th minute when she dribbled down the left side of the field, beat the Holy Family defender and fired a shot in the right side of the net to give Mercy the win.
Mercy held a 17-6 edge in shots and 9-6 edge in corner kicks.
