AMHERST, N.Y. (Sept. 28, 2019) – Despite three saves from junior Melissa Torres (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada), the Mercy College women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to ECC foe Daemen College on Saturday afternoon at Karrer Field.
The Mavericks (5-2, 1-1 ECC) see their five-game winning streak come to an end and drop their first ECC game, while the Wildcats (6-0-2, 1-0-1 ECC) remain unbeaten on the year.
Sophomore Claudia McKail (Santa Clarita, Calif./Canyon) recorded the lone Mavericks shot on goal and senior Trista Seara (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and sophomore Jessica Hoyt (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) added two shots. Torres made three saves to take the loss.
Daemen was led by Alyssa Mercado who scored the lone goal in the game and Maddie Flores who made one save to post a shutout.
Seara opened the contest with a scoring opportunity in the 18th minute when she hit the crossbar. Torres made a pair of saves in the 23rd minute to keep the game scoreless. The game remained scoreless heading into halftime with shots tied at 4-4.
McKail forced Flores to make a save in the 59th minute, but the Wildcats answered by scoring in the 60th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Mercado found the back of the net following a Daemen corner kick.
Mercy was unable to record a shot in the final 30 minutes of action and the Wildcats held on for the victory.
The Mavericks held a 7-6 edge in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Danny Leon Jr. and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, October 5th when they host Molloy at 12 p.m.
