Rebolledo-Camus and Achondo Score to Lead No. 16 Men's Soccer to 2-1 Victory Over Franklin Pierce

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 12, 2019) – Powered by goals from seniors Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) and Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile/Colegio Del Verbo Divino), the No. 16 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 2-1 victory over Franklin Pierce University on Thursday afternoon at Mercy Field.

The Mavericks (2-0-1) remain unbeaten on the year, while the Ravens (2-1) drop their first game of the season.

Rebolledo-Camus and Achondo both scored their first goals of the year. Seniors Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University) and Gaston Rozenblum (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Escuelas Tecnicas ORT) and sophomore Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) had assists. Junior Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) made three saves to earn the win.

Franklin Pierce received a goal from Stefan Lohberger and an assist from Yannik Felber. Jadel Poon-Lewis played the first 61:18 in goal and made one save. Clay Thomas played the final 28:42 in net and made two saves to take the loss.

The two teams traded shots on goal in the first 12 minutes of action, but both goalkeepers made saves to keep the game scoreless. Achondo had a chance in the 21st minute when his shot hit the crossbar, but neither team could score heading into the late stages of the first half.

Mercy finally broke through in the 43rd minute when Mangada and Rozenblum fed a ball to Achondo who fired the ball into the net to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. It remained 1-0 heading into halftime with Franklin Pierce holding a 5-4 edge in shots.

The score remained 1-0 heading into the late second half. Mercy would increase the lead to 2-0 when Jones fired a cross into the middle where Rebolledo-Camus used a back heel kick to put the ball into the net.

Franklin Pierce scored a late goal with less than 30 seconds left but it was not enough as Mercy earned the win.

Shots were tied at 9-9 and Franklin Pierce held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 14th when they play at Millersville at 6 p.m.
