DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 25, 2019) – Powered by goals from seniors Ignacio Mangada (Alicante, Spain/Campbellsville University) and Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile/Saint George's College) and graduate student Juan Lares (Orlando, Fla./Warner University), the No. 9 Mercy College men's soccer team earned a 3-0 victory over Jefferson University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-0-1) have won five games in a row and match their best start since 2016, while the Rams (0-5-1) remain winless on the year.
Mangada now has four goals on the year and also added an assist. Rebolledo-Camus recorded his third goal of the season and Lares picked up his first goal as a Maverick. Senior Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina/Instituto Francesco Faa Di Bruno) and freshman Vasco Baptista (Alges, Portugal/Escola Secundaria De Miraflores) also dished out assists. Junior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) played the first half in net and made two saves to earn the win. Junior Jordan Williams (Newton, N.J./North Carolina Wesleyan College) played the second half in goal.
Jefferson was led by Sebastien Durand and Theophilus Ijeboi who both recorded a shot on goal. Stephen Paul made eight saves to take the loss.
The teams traded shots on goal in the first eight minutes of action before a Jefferson hand ball in the box led to a Mercy penalty kick in the 16th minute. Mangada capitalized on the opportunity and gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
The score remained 1-0 until the 34th minute when Rebolledo-Camus scored following a shot by Baptista, which gave Mercy a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
The second half saw Jefferson have their best scoring opportunity in the 55th minute when a Gus Ward hit the left post. However, the score stayed at 2-0 heading to the 81st minute of action.
Mangada took a corner in the 81st minute and fired the ball across the goal to the left side where Corral headed the ball to Lares who headed the ball into the net to give Mercy a 3-0 lead. The Mavericks held the Rams without a shot on goal for the remainder of the contest to earn the win.
Mercy held a 15-10 edge in shots and Jefferson held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, September 28th when they play at Daemen at 1:30 p.m.
