DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2019) – Despite the first collegiate goal from freshman Katie Kreider (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) in her Mercy debut, the Mercy College field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Lindenwood University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (0-1) drop their season opener, while the Lions (1-1) pick up their first win of the season.
Kreider scored on one shot and freshman Alyssa Sacco (Patchogue, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) had an assist. Sophomore Lauren Viscione (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) had a game-high 16 saves to take the loss.
Lindenwood received goals from Lauren Roberts and Bridget Hoogendijk. Mackenzie Litterst made two saves to earn the win.
The opening quarter saw Viscione make two early saves before Hoogendijk scored in the 13th minute following a pass from Caro Theunisz to make it 1-0. The score remained 1-0 heading into the second quarter.
Viscione made six more saves to start the second quarter to keep the game 1-0 before Kreider scored off a cross from Sacco in the 22nd minute to tie the game up at 1-1. The teams headed into halftime tied at 1-1 with Viscione making eight saves in the first half.
In the third quarter Viscione made four more saves to keep the score at 1-1 heading into the fourth quarter.
Viscione stopped four more shots in the fourth quarter, but the Lions got on the board in the 49th minute to take a 2-1 lead. Hoogendijk fired a long shot that was deflected by Roberts and into the back of the cage. Mercy was unable to find the equalizer giving Lindenwood the victory.
Lindenwood held a 24-4 edge in shots and a 12-6 edge in penalty corners.
Head Coach Morgan O'Donohue and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 11th when they host New Haven at 4 p.m.
